MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - The coronavirus has turned up in the Macomb County Jail.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says an inmate at the jail, off Elizabeth Road near Groesbeck in Mount Clemens, has tested positive for COVID-19.

Wickersham says the inmate has been isolated since Sunday, and jail medical staff were informed of his positive test results on Wednesday.

It's the first person to test positive for coronavirus in the jail thus far.

"We have done our best to implement and add procedures that protect our staff and inmates from COVID-19, but unfortunately, no environment is immune," Wickersham said in a statement.

The sheriff said added that the jail population continues to decline, with 540 inmates in a facility that can house 1,238.
