DETROIT (WWJ) - A 20-year-old Detroit man is facing attempted murder and carjacking charges after allegedly beating a 72-year-old woman with a rock.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's office says Shon Lacey, Jr. knew the victim and had shoveled her snow in the past. It's further alleged that Lacey assaulted the victim last Thursday by repeatedly striking her in the head and upper torso with a rock. He then allegedly stole her vehicle and drove it away.
The victim was found shortly before 8:30 a.m. inside her home in the 13970 block of Lauder, near Schoolcraft and Grand River Avenue on the west side, and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police arrested Lacey last week after he was spotted in the victim's car. Investigators accuse Lacey of beating the woman with a rock in a home on Lauder Street near Grand River and Schoolcraft. It's unclear what sparked the attack. Lacey is due back in court next week.
Officers canvassed the area in a marked patrol car and found Lacey driving the victim's vehicle. When officers initiated a traffic stop, Lacey drove away and struck another vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot. Officers later found him nearby and he was taken into custody. Lacey was arraigned Saturday on charges of carjacking, assault with intent to murder, unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle, receiving and concealing stolen property – motor vehicle and fleeing and eluding police – third degree. Bond was set at $1 million cash/surety.
Lacey is due back in court for a probable cause conference on Feb. 19 and a preliminary examination on Feb. 26.
