BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- Police are praising an Oakland County man for his generosity after finding an envelope full of cash in the middle of the street.

Bloomfield Township police say a resident was walking in his neighborhood last summer when he found the unmarked envelope, which contained more than $700. The man went to the police station on Aug. 29, 2019, to make a found property report, hoping police would be able to find the rightful owner of the money.

Police tried to track down the person who dropped the money, but after six months, police returned the money to the man who found it on Monday.

Police say what happened next was "an unbelievably giving gesture."

The resident donated the $700 -- along with about $300 of his own money -- to the Gary Davis Scholarship Fund at the Oakland Police Academy.

The donation, totaling $1,000, will benefit the foundation named after Gary Davis, a Bloomfield Township Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty in May 2004.
