(WWJ) A young man is dead and two children are in the hospital after a head-on crash in Warren.

Hoover Rd. was closed for hours between 12 and 13 Mile roads Monday afternoon for the on-scene investigation.

Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer explained what happened, at around 1 p.m.:

"The victim was traveling northbound on Hoover at Common, went over the center line, hit a car head-on that was going southbound on Hoover that was occupied by a mother and her two children," Dwyer said.

Dywer told WWJ Newsradio 950 that police are working to determine why the 23-year-old Warren man who died drove into oncoming traffic.

"They're still taking measurements, and we'll probably get a toxicology report on him," Dwyer said. "So we don't know why he did that; if he suffered some sort of an attack or what happened at this point. It's just at its initial stages as far as the investigation."

The two kids suffered head injuries, Dwyer said. He did not say how old the children are.

No names have been released.

The roadway has since reopened to traffic.
