DEARBORN (WWJ) - A 25-year-old man who police say opened fire during a domestic dispute in a Dearborn home packed with people has turned himself in.
"As a direct result of the support from local news media and the assistance of the public," police said, Jimmy Mitchell surrendered at the Dearborn Police Department Monday afternoon.
Mitchell was arraigned in 19th District Court on 14 felony counts: One count of first degree home invasion, two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (felonious assault) and five counts of felony firearm.
He was remanded into custody in the Wayne County Jail without bond.
"The community is a safer place with this subject in custody. I am grateful to the hard-working men and women of this department and our regional partners for a job well done," said Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad.
Police said Mitchell was responsible for a shooting that happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 at a home on Boston and Banner streets, near Telegraph Rd. and Michigan Ave. Four adults and five children were inside the home when Mitchell allegedly showed up, started an argument, and shot a 24-year-old man multiple times.
The mother of a woman who lives in the home, who asked not to be identified, said this was not the first time the family has had issues with Mitchell. He's her daughter's ex-boyfriend and the father of one of the kids, the woman said.
"These men are out here now, they are hurting people because a woman don't like you or want to be with you. And that's ridiculous," she told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
Police had sought tips to find Mitchell, who was considered armed and dangerous prior to his arrest.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was listed in critical condition at an area hospital following the shooting. His current condition is unknown. No one else in the home was injured.
Mitchell will be back in court for a probable cause conference s scheduled for Feb. 7.
