Missing Man's Body Pulled From Detroit River Off Grosse Ile

GROSSE ILE (WWJ) - Authorities say a body recovered from the waters of the Detroit River appears to be that of a missing Canadian man.

The discovery was made around 9 a.m. Saturday, just north of Stony Island off the east coast of Grosse Ile.

Police say boaters found the body of a middle-aged white man dressed in black sweatpants, a black zip-up jacket and white tennis shoes floating in the water.

The man's identity is confirmed to be that of a 36-year-old man who was reported missing to Windsor police on Thursday.

Lt. Kenneth Pelland, with the Gross Ile Township Police Department, said it appears the man went missing off the Canadian shore and then floated down the river.

"Based on information that Windsor provided us in their police report, it's believed that the subject may have entered the water maybe near the Ambassador Bridge or near the casino area," Pelland told WWJ's Jon Hewett.

A cause of death has yet to be determined but police say foul play is not suspected.

"The Wayne County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy probably tomorrow, and then we'll work with the Windsor Police service to determine if any action needs to be taken on our end," said Pelland.

The man's name is being withheld pending notification of family.

An investigation is ongoing.
