NORTHVILLE (WWJ) - A metro Detroit teacher and coach has been arraigned on sexual assault charges for the alleged abuse of a student, 10 years ago.
Jason William Dean, who currently works at Northville High School, faced a judge in 52-2 District Court in Clarkston on Wednesday.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the victim was 14 years old in 2010 when Dean — at the time her teacher at Cedar Crest Academy in Springfield Township — allegedly had sex with her on school grounds, at after-school events, in a hotel, at secret apartment he rented, and in other locations.
It's alleged that Dean began chatting with the child online when she was in 6th grade; and that she was in the 7th and 8th grades at the time of the sexual activity.
After the victim went to the police earlier this month, school administrators placed Dean, a 36-year-old Livonia resident, on administrative leave.
"I applaud this brave victim in coming forward to report this truly atrocious behavior by a teacher," said Sheriff Michael Bouchard. "Our teachers are supposed to be trusted mentors, role models, and leaders for our children, and when one violates this trust, they must be held accountable and punished to the fullest extent of the law."
Dean was arraigned on three counts of felony Criminal Sexual Conduct – First Degree, and remained held Wednesday in the Oakland County Jail on a $50,000 cash/surety, or 10% bond. If he does post bond, Dean was ordered not to leave the state without permission, not possess weapons, use alcohol or drugs, and have no contact with the victim, witnesses or children, other than his own children.
The sheriff's office said Dean is expected to be arraigned on two additional charges in 51st District Court in Waterford Township on Thursday. Details regarding those charges were not immediately released.
While teaching at Cedar Crest at the time of his alleged crimes, Dean also coached soccer and basketball. He is now employed at Northville High School and is also coach for Michigan Hawks youth travel soccer teams.
There may be information to suggest there are additional victims, according to authorities.
