Novi Considers Starting School Later So Students Can Get More Sleep

NOVI (WWJ) - Do students need more time to catch up on their sleep in the morning?

The Novi School Board is considering pushing back the start of classes for all schools in the district. The board is meeting Thursday to discuss a plan that would allow for students to potentially get an extra 45 minutes of sleep.

The plan to delay school came about because officials believe students aren't getting enough sleep and it's affecting their performance.

Under the proposed changes, high schools students would start their first period classes at 8 a.m. instead of 7:15.

"I love that. I hate waking up at 6:30. It's no fun," one student confessed.

"I think it would make me more focused in first hour. A lot of people, not me specifically, but they skip first hour and I think that would slow down if it starts later," said one student.

"It's a good idea because of the fact that it will help kids actually be able to come to first hour more," another student agreed. "I know a lot of people who can't get up early enough in the morning to do so."

But not everybody is in favor of the new start time.

"It pushes back the after school activities and so it's harder for kids to go home and do homework, which makes it run later into the night. So, I know it's for sleep but it's not going to help sleep, like, at all," said one student.

"We're just going to stay up later and it's just going to be the same exact thing," another student admitted. "And people that work aren't going to get enough hours they can get after school."

The board is expected to vote on the potential changes by the end of the year.
