NOVI (WWJ) - A Novi woman has been charged in the death of her 2-year-old son.
According to the city of Novi, 36-year-old Chunhai Shi is facing charges of felony murder, first degree-premeditated murder and first degree child abuse. She was arraigned in a local hospital on Monday.
Police said the father of the young victim, Mason Zhang, came home last Friday to find the boy and his mother had been "victims of violence." The dad called 911, and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shi was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Authorities have not yet said how they believe the toddler was killed, but did say an autopsy conducted by the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office on Saturday ruled his death a homicide.
The mother, who remained hospitalized Tuesday under police guard, was ordered by Magistrate Victor Zanolli to be held without bond. Officials said she will be transported to the Oakland County Jail when she's discharged from the hospital.
Shi is due to appear in 52-1 District Court for a probable cause conference on Jan. 15. She faces life in prison if convicted.
The family is originally from China and has lived in the U.S. since 2014.
