(WWJ) Authorities now know the cause of death for a person whose skull was found in a backyard fire pit in Trenton last week.

Police said Wednesday that the person died of a gunshot wound to the head, and that a homicide investigation is underway.

While one has been answered, many questions remain in the case, such as whether the skull and bone fragments found outside a home on Wilson Street are from a man or woman.

Police say it could take another month or two to identify the person.  Anthropologists have been working with detectives on the case.

The home was previously owned by 57-year-old Mark Eberly, who was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in Tennessee last month.

The new homeowners, who just recently moved in, called police after making the gruesome discovery on July 7.

Authorities say Eberly's girlfriend is missing.
