(WWJ) As we head into the holiday season, law enforcement wants to warn the public about the latest scams.
The St. Clair Shores police department is reaching out with a "friendly reminder" for everyone that scammers will be trying to take advantage, especially of seniors, and often during the holidays. SCS police provided the following list of six scams that are going around.
"Please read," police said, "and if you have any questions you can always contact your local PD."
1 - Utilities scam
You will receive a phone call from someone stating they are from DTE/Consumers and that you are past due on payments. They will ask you to pay immediately or your service will be shut off. If you are unsure if you have not paid your bill, hang up and contact DTE/ Consumers directly to see if you have an outstanding balance.
2 - Owing the IRS money
You will receive a phone call from a person claiming to be the IRS and that you may owe x amount of money. These people will suggest that you send money right away before them come arrest you. This is an attempt to scare you into sending them money.
3 - Grandkids in jail and must send money to get them out
You will receive a phone call and the person will claim that your grandson/granddaughter are in jail and they need bail money sent right away. They may even say that your grandson/granddaughter have been in an accident and need you to send money. Please if you receive a phone call like this contact your family members and look into it before just sending money
5 - Social Security number was compromised and you need to send money
You will receive a phone call from someone who states that your social security number has been compromised now you must transfer your bank funds into different accounts to avoid someone from accessing them. This is an attempt for the person to get money from you. If this happens keep an eye on your bank accounts and funds to make sure nothing has been taken.
5 - Lottery scam and you must pay the taxes before receiving the money
If you have to pay to receive money, its not true. You will never have to pay to receive winnings from the lottery.
6 - Computer virus help scam
You will receive a phone call or email stating that your computer has a virus and they need you to send money so they can get into your computer and get rid of it. The people calling are just looking to gain information and payment from you but will not be able to assist you. If your computer is running slow or seems to need a repair, contact a reliable company to look at it in person.
** Bonus hot tip
In all of these scams: Crooks will often ask for gift cards.
"If you receive a call or email that pertains to any of these six scenarios, or even something that is not listed, and they ask you to pay in cash or in gift cards, it is most likely a scam.." SCS police said.
Anyone who receives these calls or emails and thinks it could be legitimate is urged to talk it over with a friend, family member or contact your local police department before sending any money.
