Police Make Arrest In Case Of Maskless Shopper Who Wiped His Nose On Store Clerk

(WWJ) A man caught on camera wiping his nose on a store clerk in northern Oakland County has been identified, and is in police custody.

Holly police said Tuesday a 68-year-old man from Linden, Michigan, was arrested in the case, after video of the incident was released on Monday.

"Thank you to all who shared this post, a viewer tip assisted investigators in determining the identity of the suspect," the department wrote on Facebook.

The incident happened at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at a Dollar Tree store in the 400 block of N. Saginaw St., south of Grange Hall Rd. in Holly.

Holly Police Chief Jerry Narsh said, when told by the clerk that he must wear a mask while shopping, the suspect replied: "Here, I will use this as a mask."

"He approached her, grabbed the sleeve of her shirt, and wiped his nose and face on her clothing, on her shirt," Nash told WWJ Newsradio 950's Zach Clark. "He then walked away from her, making some angry comments about the policy, and left the store."

Police told WWJ that the suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery.

The man is being tested for COVID-19, police said, and will likely face further, more serious charges if he is found to be positive for the virus.

Police noted that the store's mask policy is stated on signs posted on the entry doors.
