(WWJ) Two people from Tennessee are in custody after an armed robbery and carjacking outside the Somerset Collection in Troy.
Troy police Sergeant Meghen Lehman says the suspects first approached the victims before they went into the mall, an hour before the incident Wednesday night, asking where to find the valet.
But they waited until the victims had completed their shopping to strike, in the northwest parking lot of the South side of the mall.
"There was two occupants in a Dodge Charger. They were approached be a Nissan sedan with four suspects in there," Lehman told WWJ's Dan Jenkins. "Two people exited the Nissan, got out with guns, approached the people in the Charger, took their personal property and stole the car."
"The two suspects both had weapons," Lehman said. "One was described as a handgun, and the other was described as an AK-47 type rifle."
The carjackers took off in the Charger, and were later spotted in Washtenaw County.
The Charger crashed on I-94 in Jackson County after a pursuit, according to Michigan State Police. The two suspects in the car, a man and a woman, were arraigned in charges in Jackson County Thursday, and will face additional charges in Oakland County.
So far, MSP said the driver, 22-year-old Thereon Forman, is charged with receiving and concealing stolen property (vehicle), fleeing and eluding police and two gun charges. The passenger, 20-year-old Keyiana Butler, is charged with receiving and concealing stolen property (vehicle).
As the investigation continues, Lehman said police are still looking for the Nissan, registered out of the Chicago area, which also sped away from the scene.
"The two suspects that did the carjacking and armed robbery, they're in custody," Lehman explained. "But there was someone else driving the Nissan that was there too, so we want to locate that vehicle as well."
No one was injured.
"We did have an officer at the mall; we always do have officers are Somerset Mall," Lehman noted. "They're there full time, and so he got there within a minute or two of this being reported."
