Gunman Surrenders, Ending Tense Standoff After Deadly Shooing In Detroit

(WWJ) An armed standoff that had police packed in a northwest Detroit neighborhood has ended with an alleged gunman in custody.

Police said the 30-year-old suspect came out of the home and surrendered to police, with help from family membera, shortly before 1 p.m.

DPD Commander Darrin Szilagy said the man was wanted for questioning in the shooting death of a man in a Jeep, along Dexter Ave. near the Lodge Freeway and Livernois, early Wednesday morning.

A SWAT team had surrounded the home, in the 15700 block of Dexter.

"We know this suspect has a history of mental illness," Szilagy told reporters, amid the standoff.

"Unfortunately, we do believe he's got a couple of young children inside, and we know that he is armed with a couple of military-style assault weapons," the Commander continued."So our officers right now are facing a very dangerous situation. We have an unstable person, possibly wanted for a shooting. And we're asking him to come out and he is refusing to do so."

Police said it turned out there was one child in the home, but the child was unharmed.

This came after another suspect was arrested earlier in the morning in connection with the deadly shooting of a 19-year-old man, whose age was earlier reported as 30.

Szilagy said said the first man in custody was a resident on the block who'd allegedly fired shots at the victim "for reasons that were still investigating."

"Further investigation determined that another neighbor in an adjoining house also fired shots from a long gun — possibly an AK-47," Szilagy said. "While our homicide detectives were there working the scene, they made contact with this person through the door, asked him to come out so they could make contact with him. He has declined."

That's when the standoff began.

No names have been released as the investigation continues.
