Businessman Robert Carmack Charged With Driving Drunk Downriver

DETROIT (WWJ) - A businessman involved in a land dispute with the city of Detroit is facing a drunken driving charge for a third time. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced she has charged 60-year-old Robert Carmack of Woodhaven with one count of operating while intoxicated, third offense.

The 60-year-old was allegedly over the limit when he was stopped by police in Brownstown Township back on Oct. 27, although details about the traffic stop were not immediately released. He was arraigned last Friday and granted a $5,000, 10% bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for Jan. 3, and preliminary exam is for Jan. 7, both in 33rd District Court in Woodhaven.

If convicted, Carmack faces up to five years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines.

Separately, from the OWI case, Carmack is facing charges with multiple felonies in connection with a Detroit land deal. That case is being handled by the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office to avoid any conflicts of interest.

Those who follow the news may have heard of Carmack in connection with issues surrounding Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Carmack made headlines when he publicly accused the mayor of having an improper relationship with a woman who runs a charity in the city. The nonprofit Make Your Date's dealings with Detroit were later the subject of investigations by Detroit's Office of the Inspector General and the AG's Office. In November of last year, Carmack released video shot by a private investigator he hired to follow the mayor, showing the then-married Duggan visiting the woman's home after hours.
