(WWJ) Michigan State Police say a person who was shot on I-94 on Wednesday has died.
At around 3 p.m. on Sep. 9, calls came in about a shooting on westbound I-94 near 8 Mile Road, with a red car fleeing the area, according to MSP.
A short time later, witnesses reported they saw a male driver jump out of the bullet-riddled red Pontiac G6 at the intersection of Roscommon and Peerless in Harper Woods. The driver ran from the scene, leaving behind the passenger who'd been shot.
The wounded passenger was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, police said, but died on Thursday.
The man who was driving the car was arrested a short time later, and a gun recovered, police said.
Troopers, who shut down westbound I-94 at 10 Mile Rd. that evening to investigate, found two different caliber shell casings on the freeway.
Police said there was a second vehicle involved what appears to have been a shootout. There is no description of the second car.
The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.
MSP said detectives are still working leads and interviewing family and witnesses as the investigation continues.
The victim's name has not been released.
This was the fifth freeway shooting MSP has investigated in metro Detroit over the past month, following a string of more than a dozen freeway shootings over the summer. Police said many of them were linked to road rage incidents, and none of them are believed to have been related.
