(WWJ) People driving on I-696 near the Detroit Zoo in Oakland County will be seeing more Michigan State Police troopers out today.
State Police say there has been an uptick in fatal crashes in metro Detroit in recent days, and many of those crashes are due to speeding.
With that in mind, police said troopers will be out Wednesday, June 24, in the area of I-696 and Woodward Ave., near Royal Oak and Ferndale, looking for speeders and "doing some extra education to get people back to good driving habits."
Troopers will also be looking for seatbelts since,"We have also seen a lot of ejections due to people not wearing their seatbelts," MSP said.
The crackdown part of an enforcement effort State Police are calling "#DriveRightWednesday."
"As we continue to get back to normal, it’s important to practice those good safe driving tips," MSP said. "Please slow down! Please wear your seatbelts!"
The weather looks just about perfect today, so there could be some traffic near the zoo. The Detroit Zoo recently reopened for visitors — with reservations and masks required, timed ticket entry and limited capacities.
