LIVONIA (WWJ) - A Livonia man told police three people broke into his home, and he shot one of them.

One suspect is in custody and two remain at large, Thursday afternoon, following the incident Wednesday evening.

A resident in the 29000 block of Joy Road reported that three strangers entered his home, without permission, and began to assault him. He described the men as African-American, all around 20 to 30 years old.

The man said he grabbed his handgun and shot one of the intruders, before being knocked unconscious. When he came around, he told police, the suspects were gone.

A short time later, Michigan State Police notified Livonia police that they were investigating a report of a man being treated from a gunshot wound to the abdomen at Beaumont Hospital in Wayne who matched the description of one of the suspects. Livonia officers responded to the hospital where they interviewed the suspect, a 24-year-old Inkster man, who had non life-threatening injuries.

The man told police he was shot in the area of Glenwood and Central in Inkster, near Middle Belt Road north of Michigan Ave.; but police didn't buy it. After he was discharged, the suspect was arrested.

Police said detectives are following up on several leads as the investigation continues.

No charges have yet been filed and no names have been released.
