(WWJ) A Taylor couple is facing possible charges after they were rescued from the choppy waters of Lake Huron along with their three children.

The Huron County Sheriff told WWJ the family left from Turnip Rock Sunday evening, in Port Austin in the Thumb Area, in four kayaks tied together.

Darkness had already settled in and the winds were blowing at 35 miles per hour, according to the Sheriff.

WWJ’s Ron Dewey reported the children; 6, 10, and 14; were “cold and exhausted, dressed only in swimwear.”

Sheriff Kelly Hanson said the family decided to go out late and stay out because they wanted to get sunset pictures.

All five of them were rescued by a Port Austin police patrol boat.

Sheriff Hanson said “things could have gone south for the family really fast” because of the winds and the time of day they went out.

The Huron County Sheriff’s Department said it is considering charges against the parents including Reckless Operation, Going Out Without Proper Lighting and Too Many People On A One Person Kayak.
