(WWJ) Snuggle in, and crank up the heat. According to forecasters, it's going to be colder than ever before on this date in metro Detroit.
The National Weather Service says temperatures will be plummeting to record-breaking lows, down to a mere 5 degrees in Detroit overnight. The previous record was 12 degrees, all the way back in 1912.
Records were also broken earlier Tuesday, with an afternoon high of 24 degrees. The previous record was 31.
"Somebody changed the calendar here on us; I mean, this is like the middle of January," WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Bowers said, Tuesday afternoon. "We're 25 degrees below normal here today, with temperatures only in the middle-20s...and it's setting us up for a frigid night."
"A lot of records were set this morning across the upper Midwest, and tonight it's our turn," Bowers said. "With the snowcover, we're easily going to be falling into the single digits. The record is 12, we're calling for 5, and many outlying areas are going to be down around 0."
"...To break a record by 7 degree is really impressive."
Metro Detroit will see a little bit of sunshine on Wednesday, Bowers said, but the high will only get up to around 27 degrees.
AccuWeather is calling for more snow showers late Wednesday night into Thursday, when the temperature will warm up a few degrees to around 35 -- which is still below normal. It'll be just about as cold Friday into the weekend, Bowers said, with highs in the low to mid-30s.
Mark Torregrossa, Chief Meteorologist for MLive, told WWJ it might be a while until things start to warm up.
"Thursday’s still chilly, we’ll probably start to have some melting late Thursday into Friday and it’s going to be Sunday or Monday before we have 40 degrees again," Torregrossa told WWJ.
