(WWJ) A new homeowner in Trenton found a human skull in his backyard fire pit.
Trenton Police say the man made the gruesome discovery on his property in the area of Wilson and Vreeland Monday night.
David McCrone, his neighbor, said he was shocked.
“I’m amazed. This is a nice quiet neighborhood, good wholesome people. Lots of kids. …You should have seen all the kids out last night, all in amazement,” McCrone told WWJ’s Charlie Langton. “Now I think they’ll probably call it the haunted house.”
The home was previously owned by Mark Eberly, who was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in Tennessee on June 27.
The News Herald reports Eberly opened fire on a Tennessee Police Deputy who stopped him to conduct a welfare check about an hour west of Knoxville.
The new homeowners called police after finding the skull.
Trenton Police are leading the investigation with the help of Michigan State Police. Investigators have only found the remains of one person so far, but they continue to comb the area.
