THAW Throwback: Sonny Eliot Forecasts Chilly Weather 12 Years Ago [VIDEO]

Today is WWJ Newsradio 950’s 17th Annual Winter Survival Radiothon for THAW, The Heat and Warmth Fund  — and as the late, great Sonny Eliot would say: "It's cold enough to see a penguin buying thermal underwear!"

Some of us at WWJ have been doing this a long time, and we know many of our listeners have been with us the whole way, too.

As we reminisce about radiothons past, here's a look back at Sonny delivering his signature wild and wacky weather forecast during the live remote broadcast of WWJ's 5th Annual Winter Survival Radiothon for THAW at Detroit's Boll Family YMCA on Feb. 8, 2008. (Get today's forecast, here).

Sonny passed away on Nov. 16, 2012.

So, what's this THAW thing all about?

While you're turning up your thermostat a degree or two tonight, it's a fact that thousands of families in metro Detroit — perhaps some of your neighbors — can't even afford to heat their homes or keep the lights on. Some even face choosing between warmth or providing food and medication for their families.

To help these families in crisis, WWJ and THAW are partnering for this 17th annual fundraising event. The goal is to raise $1.5 million in emergency energy assistance funding.

Please help us make a difference. CLICK HERE to make a secure online donation now (even a few dollars will help!), or call 888-579-4950 to speak to one of our friendly volunteers! Do it now. The radiothon ends at 7 p.m. Friday. Another option, bid on a little something for yourself in ONLINE AUCTION FOR THAW.

Those looking for help from THAW can call 1-800-866-THAW (8429).
