Warren Police: 50 Fugitives Arrested In "Operation Crucial Capture"

WARREN, Mich. (WWJ) -- Warren Police Commissioner Dwyer says "Operation Crucial Capture" was a success.

With the help of  numerous local law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Team, the five-day operation led to the arrests of 50 fugitives between Jan. 13 and Jan. 17. All those who were arrested had outstanding warrants for a litany of what Dwyer called "very serious crimes."

"The arrests of persons included on the warrants were for bank robbery, assault with intent to commit murder, criminal sexual assaults, home invasion, delivery and manufacturing of drugs, child abuse, domestic violence and various weapon offenses," Dwyer said.

"This was an extremely intense, well-organized, well-planned and executed operation. Many of those arrested were very dangerous fugitives who were armed. These arrests are not like arresting people for traffic violations, believe me," he said.

Many of those arrested in the operation are "career criminals" with a history of violence that posed a "significant threat to the public safety," Dwyer says.

In addition to those arrested, the commissioner says the operation also included three search warrants in the cities of Warren, Livonia and Oak Park that resulted in the seizure of firearms, narcotics, and more than $20,000 in cash.

Dwyer says the operation, which involved 75 officers from different agencies, saw 21 people arrested in Warren, 10 in Detroit and five in Roseville. The other 14 arrests were spread across a dozen metro Detroit communities.

"We knew exactly where we were going, who we were looking for, and that didn't just happen by accident. There's a lot of work, lot of intelligence that has to go in to locate these fugitives and it was very successful. We're very pleased with the results," Dwyer said.

Warren Police recently conducted two other sweeps, targeting sex traffickers. resulting in numerous arrests. Dwyer says they are going to continue the operation with the help of federal support.
