Wayne County Executive Out Of Quarantine, Cancels State Of County Address

DETROIT (WJW) - Wayne County Executive Warren Evans is coming out of self quarantine and canceling the State of the County address.

Evans told WWJ's Vickie Thomas that he has been quarantined for the past two weeks after a staffer contracted the virus.

"I've had a staff person who has since tested positive for COVID and I've been self-isolated for the last 14 days," Evans said. "I'm fine. I'm having no symptoms, haven't had any issues in the period of confinement."

He may have been in isolation, but Evans has been working every day on solutions to the virus outbreak for Wayne County. As of Tuesday afternoon, 873 of the 1,791 cases reported by the state are out Wayne County (310) and Detroit (563), including at least 13 deaths.

"I've been working every day, working on county programs and trying to make sure that we're providing the best service out there to people," Evans said. "But it's an uphill battle and it's one, quite frankly, the government can't control. It's one that people have to control and people have to be more serious about isolating themselves and making good social choices."

One choice Evans has made is canceling the State of the County address, which was scheduled for Thursday evening, until the State of Emergency is over. Evans was initially going to deliver a truncated version of the annual address online, but then decided to postpone the event all together.
