Winter Heat Wave: Metro Detroit Sets Record High Temperature In December

thermometer

DETROIT (WWJ) - The calendar might say December, but the weather definitely doesn't feel like it.

Temperatures were so warm on Thursday, Dec. 26 in metro Detroit, you'd swear it was spring. In fact, forecasters say we broke the record high temperature set back in 2016, and it's well above the average of 33 degrees.

"Boy, we even set a record today," AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Samuhel said of the unseasonably warm December weather. "The record high was 57 and we made it to at least 58 degrees. In short, it is warm out there."

While we probably won't be breaking any more weather records before the end of the decade, forecasters say temperatures will still be above normal for at least the next week.

Here's a look at the local forecast from the WWJ Weather Team:

Friday -- Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny. High 49. Low 31.

Saturday -- Mostly cloudy. High around 46. Low 40.

Sunday -- Rain. High near 58. Low 39.

Monday -- A chance of rain in the morning, then cloudy. High near 45. Low 32.

Tuesday -- A chance of rain and snow showers; cloudy. High near 38. Low around 28.

New Year's Day -- Partly sunny. High near 40. Low 30.
