After many years of fighting underage smoking: "We now have this severe addiction issue with nicotine, once again," said President of Bloomfield Youth Assistance Denise Ullem.
Vaping was the number one disciplinary offense at Bloomfield Hills High School, where Principal Charlie Hollerith says they had over 73 days of suspension.
Realizing that vaping wasn't just a health concern, but had become much more, the school district conceived and launched a program designed to not only prevent suspensions, but to give students the tools they need to set goals and grow into young adults.
But could this work at schools across metro Detroit, or even nationwide?
"Nowhere else in the county have I seen (vaping) being addressed on these multiple levels...you cannot suspend your way out of an addiction," Executive Director of Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition Carol Mastroianni.
WWJ's Rob St. Mary goes in depth on teen vaping in the latest episode of WWJ In Depth.
