TROY (WWJ) - One person is dead and another is hospitalized after they were hit by a pickup truck at a car wash in Troy.
Troy police say they are actively investigating the incident that happened Monday afternoon at the Jax Car Wash on W. Maple Road, near Coolidge Hwy.
At around 1 p.m., police said a Ford F-150 was proceeding through an automated wash area to the drying area, it suddenly veered to where employees were standing. The truck struck two employees, pinning one to a brick wall and killing him.
Troy Police Sgt. Meghan Lehman said both employees were taken to Royal Oak Beaumont where the one who was pinned was pronounced dead. The other suffered only minor injuries, she said.
The driver of the pickup, identified by police as a 64-year old Rochester man, was not injured.
While the cause of the crash remains unknown, Lehman said the driver is remorseful and that it doesn't appear to have been an intentional act.
"It does not appear to be a malfunction of the car wash; not something people have to worry about happening to them," Lehman added. "But as to why that car went off in that direction, that's under investigation."
What police will be looking at, she said, is whether alcohol, drugs, distracted driving or a medical condition may have played a role.
No charges have been filed and names have been released as an investigation continues.
