ROCKWOOD (WWJ) - An investigation is underway in the Downriver city of Rockwood, where woman was found dead in a garage.

Rockwood Police Chief Randy Krause said they got a 911 call at around 5 a.m. Tuesday about an unresponsive female in an unattached garage on Hazel Street, just off of Huron Drive.

When EMS and officers arrived at the scene they determined that the 39-year-old woman was dead, "and apparently had been for a little bit of time."

Krause did not say how police believe the woman died, but told WWJ's Stephanie Davis that detectives are treating this as a homicide investigation due to what he called "the suspicious nature of the scene."

"Right now we're classifying the death as suspicious," the chief said, late Tuesday afternoon. "The male resident is cooperating with out ongoing investigation and at this point in time it's still an active crime scene."

The male resident was identified as the woman's boyfriend, Krause said, adding that the residents were known to police prior to this incident. He did not elaborate.

No names have been released as an investigation continues.
