Police Issue 498 Tickets, Make 10 Arrests In Crackdown On The Lodge And I-96

DETROIT (WWJ) - Michigan State Police are revealing the results of a two-day special patrol along the Lodge Freeway and I-96 that targeted speeding and aggressive drivers. 

Troopers were out in full force Monday and Tuesday, carrying out what they referred to as "Operation Freeway of Love" and "Operation Westside." Police were looking for "drivers that are more likely to cause a traffic crash" along with excessive speed, seatbelts, following too closely and other aggressive driving behaviors.


Over the two-day period, troopers made a total of 512 traffic stops, issued 498 citations and made 10 arrests. Here's a breakdown of the numbers:

  • Seat belt -- 63 
  • Speeding -- 164
  • Texting -- 31
  • Careless Driving -- 3
  • Uninsured Driver -- 90
  • Suspended License -- 7
  • Other Traffic Violations -- 140
  • Felony Drug Arrest -- 1
  • Misdemeanor Fugitive Arrest -- 6
  • Felony Fugitive Arrest -- 3

"Please remember the three main causes of crashes in Metro Detroit: Excessive Speed, Following too Close and Distracted Driving," MSP Metro Detroit said in a tweet. 

"Operation Freeway of Love" was carried out on the entire Lodge Freeway, from downtown Detroit to Northwestern Highway in Oakland County. "Operation Westside" went along I-96 from downtown Detroit to the Livingston County line, with a focus on Middlebelt Road in Wayne County and Wixom Road in Oakland County.
