SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) - Shelby Township police want to talk to anyone who witnessed a hit-and-run that has left a 26-year-old man fighting for this life.
According to Police Captain Jason Schmittler, shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday a motorcyclist crashed into the back of a Ford Fusion on 21 Mile Road, east of Hayes.
The motorcyclist, a Macomb Township resident, came off his bike and was lying in the road when he was run over by an SUV.
The driver did not stop at the scene.
"I believe that they knew they struck something in the roadway there," Schmittler told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "There were other witnesses that were in the area trying to wave the vehicle away."
The motorcyclist, whose name has not been released, was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition Thursday.
The suspect vehicle, described only as a dark-colored SUV, was last seen headed eastbound on 21 Mile Road.
While Schmittler said police do not believe the man was deliberately hit, it's illegal not leave the scene of an accident and police "definitely want to talk to the driver."
As the investigation continues, anyone with information is asked to call Shelby Police Sgt. Mark Benedettini at 586-731-2121 ext. 483.
