MILFORD, Mich. (WWJ) -- A Commerce Township woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when she lost control of her vehicle and collided with another, police said.
Authorities say the 29-year-old woman was traveling westbound on General Motors Road in the area of Martindale at around 2 p.m., when she lost control of her subcompact vehicle. The woman's car crossed the center line and slid sideways before colliding with the other vehicle.
The woman was unresponsive when first responders arrived. She was pronounced dead at Providence Park Hospital in Novi.
The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Milford police say a preliminary investigation shows that speed in relation to wintry road conditions caused the crash.
It is unclear how fast the woman was traveling, but police are urging drivers to slow down in slick road conditions.
“This is a sad reminder how important it is for drivers to slow down and drive to the weather and roadway conditions,” Milford Police Chief, Thomas C. Lindberg said in a press release. “With more weather yet to arrive please slow down and help your first responders and road crews keep you safe”.
With a Winter Weather Advisory in effect across Southeast Michigan, the latest winter storm left the area covered in snow and ice Tuesday, causing thousands of Metro Detroiters to lose power. More than 100 flights at Detroit Metro Airport were canceled Tuesday.
The advisory remains in effect until Wednesday afternoon.
