(WWJ) The parents of a Redford girl who was shot in the head by her brother are facing child abuse charges.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office filed the charges against Jonclaude Norwood Sr. and Melissa Kiser, both 27, nearly one month after their 5-year-old daughter was shot by their 4-year-old son.
Redford Township police officers were called early in the morning of July 6 to the family's home in the 26500 block of Plymouth Rd. in Redford Township, about child shot in the head.
Police said the little boy found an unsecured handgun that belonged to a relative of the parents, and the shooting was deemed an accident.
The girl is recovering.
"All of these cases are tragic. Young, precious lives are being forever altered and even lost, and we can absolutely prevent this. If you choose to have guns in your homes, please make sure that children and teens do not have easy access. It is that simple," Prosecutor Kim Worthy said in a press release.
Norwood and Kiser were arraigned in 17th District Court Monday on two counts each of second degree child abuse.
Both defendants received a $25,000 personal bond and will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for August 11.
