SOUTH LYON (WWJ/AP) - An Oakland County manufacturing facility has been fined after the death of an employee who fell into vat of sulfuric acid.
The Detroit News reported Wednesday the $32,500 fine was issued by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which completed an investigation of Michigan Seamless Tube LLC.
The accident happend Febuary 9 at the plant located on McMann Street, south of 10 Mile Road, where sulfuric acid heated to a least 160 degrees is used in a manufacturing process.
Daniel Hill, 45, was pulled out by co-workers and quickly washed off, but died at a hospital hours later.
State inspections have since resulted in five serious citations, and authorities have opened two other investigations into the company.
Michigan Seamless Tube previously said it was fully cooperating with the state and conducting its own probe.
The company, a manufacturer of carbon and alloy seamless cold-drawn pipe and tube, has until Thursday to file an appeal
Hill, who was a resident of the South Lyon area, left behind a wife and daughter.
His death came about a dozen years after another man was killed at the facility by a piece of heavy machinery.
