SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - A metro Detroit church is offering drive-thru ashes for Ash Wednesday, March 6.

A robed minister will be in front of St. David's Episcopal Church, on 12 Mile just west of Greenfield Road in Southfield, to administer ashes to the busy faithful.

Ashes-to-go will be available from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Drivers can stay in their cars while they receive their ashes, then quickly exit the driveway and continue on 12 Mile Road.

St. David's is also holding indoor Ash Wednesday services at noon and 7 p.m.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a time for fasting, abstinence from meat, and prayer in preparation for Easter. Its official name is "Day of Ashes," so called because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one's forehead in the sign of a cross.

"Ash Wednesday is intended to provide a time of reflection and repentance for what we have done and what we have failed to do," Rev. Chris Yaw said in a statement. "We hope that Drive-Thru Ashes can make the message and meaning of this day more accessible."
