State Police: Canton Man Killed In Crash On I-275

CANTON (WWJ) - A stretch of I-275 was closed for hours in Canton Township, Thursday, due a fatal crash. 

Michigan State Police said there were three vehicles involved in the accident, which happened at around 9 a.m. on northbound I-275 at Ford Rd. 


A prelminary investigation found that a vehicle rear-ended another vehicle in the middle lane of the freeway near Cherry Hill, police said. The rear-ended vehicle was then pushed into another vehicle. Two of the cars ended up in the ditch. 

The driver of the middle vehicle, identified as a 61-year-old Canton man, was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

It's not yet known if any charges are possible as other circumstances, including who was at fault for the crash, remain unclear. 

As police were on the scene investigating, all lanes of northbound lanes of I-275 were closed at Ford Road, with traffic backed up past U.S.12/Michigan Avenue. The freeway has since reopened.
