SPRINGFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - A Downriver man is behind bars following an early morning drug bust at an Oakland County rest stop.
According to Michigan State Police, troopers with the MSP Metro North Post were on patrol at around 1:30 a.m. Monday when they encountered a 28-year-old man parked at a rest area along I-75 in Springfield Township, near Holly.
After a roadside investigation, police said, troopers searched the man's vehicle and found approximately 28 grams of ketamine, 49 ecstasy pills and around $17,000 in cash.
"What police don't know about ketamine....used at veterinarian offices, it's a date rape drug that's used in a lot of clubs," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw. "It's a big problem if it gets into the clubs; people can overdose on it. Also, it does what it's intended to do: make people have amnesia, fall asleep, be very lethargic...And a lot of times people that use it use it on victims to have forced sexual intercourse with them."
What led police to find this man suspicious?
"Just good police work," Shaw told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "As you're going along and talking to people, you know of determine if things don't add up. And during their investigation on the roadside there the troopers decided to ask the guy if they could search his car, which he said they could."
The driver, identified as a Trenton resident, was arrested and lodged at the Oakland County Jail pending prosecutors' review of the case.
His name has not yet been released pending an arraignment on expected charges.
