Suspect Killed, Deputy Shot In Jackson County Standoff

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A suspect is dead and a sheriff's deputy is recovering following a shootout and hours-long standoff in Jackson County overnight.

The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. Wednesday as deputies were responding to a domestic situation in Summit Township, south of Jackson. When they arrived at the home, the suspect opened fire on the deputies -- who returned fire.

The 34-year-old suspect took off, but was found dead several hours later inside another home. Reports indicate he died after being shot by deputies. 

At least one deputy was hit several times. He was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

All of the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Jackson County Major Crimes Task Force.

The incident remains under investigation.
