Target Raises Its Minimum Wage To $13 An Hour

DETROIT (WWJ) - All Target employees will be paid at least $13 an hour, beginning in June.

Making the announcement Thursday, the retail chain said the move is the latest step in a series of annual increases it has made since announcing a plan to raise its minimum starting hourly pay from $10 to $15 by the end of 2020.

In 2017, Target bumped its minimum wage up to $11, and then to $12 last year. This is quite a bit higher than Michigan's new $9.45 an hour minimum wage, which went into affect last Friday; and far above the federal minimum $7.25, which was last increased in 2009.

Target said in a news release that, as its employees give guests their very best every day, taking care of them and their families is a "top priority."

How it plans to do that, the company states, is by investing in their careers and well-being, through robust training and leadership programs, competitive benefits, discounts and support in times of need.

"Our team is Target's greatest asset, from the newest faces to those who've been with us for many years. They're at the heart of everything we do to fulfill our purpose of bringing guests joy," said Target Chief Human Resources Officer Melissa Kremer.

"It takes a diverse, high-performing and engaged team to create experiences that make guests feel welcome and inspired, and keep them coming back. So investing in our team members is essential to keep our business growing and thriving."

Target's rate is higher than rival Walmart's $11 an hour minimum, set in January 2018; but still below that of Amazon, which raised its hourly minimum to $15 an hour in November.
