(WWJ) More than 31,000 homes and businesses remain without power across metro Detroit this morning stemming from Wednesday's storms.
That number was down at 8 a.m. about 7,000 from 90 minutes previously, so power is getting switched back on as crews work their way through neighborhoods, clearing downed branches and other debris.
The most affected area covers many east side suburbs -- stretching from to Detroit, through the Grosse Pointe .. and into Eastpointe. Mount Clemens and Ann Arbor are also having some issues. Crews are working on the repairs, some who arrived from out of state to help DTE with restoration efforts.
Consumers Energy says about 94,000 out-state residents are without power, that number coming down by about 3,000 since last check. Many of the remaining customers will be restored by the end of Friday.
Overall, DTE Energy executives say 227,000 customers lost power from the storms, with about 137,000 still without electricity yesterday morning. So roughly 100,000 were restored in the last 24 hours.
Taara O'Shee of Grosse Pointe said Wednesday night's storms felt and looked like a tunnel of wind or even a small tornado.
"Lots of trees down, house fire down the road, pretty bad," she told WWJ 950, assessing the damage in her neighborhood between Moross and Vernier, primarily on the east of Mack.
