PORT HURON (WWJ) - There's been a train derailment near Port Huron.

According to James Freed, Chief Administrative Officer for Port Huron, there were no injuries reported in the incident Friday morning, in the international St. Clair River tunnel, which connects Port Huron with Sarnia, Ontario.

Freed told WWJ Newsraido 950's Michael Cohen he was notified about the accident at around 5:45 a.m. As a result of the incident, 16th Street was closed to traffic.

"We have between 30 and 40 cars that have derailed inside the tunnel," Freed said. "There's significant damage to the tracks, so this tunnel is gonna be out of commission for awhile."

The derailment included a HAZMAT car, Freed said, and first responders were able to contain a small sulfuric acid leak.

He said there is no threat to public safety in the surrounding area, but still asked that people avoid the area as local officials work with bi-national partners at the scene.

Freed said Homeland Security, Emergency Management and regional stakeholders have been briefed on the incident.

At this time, it's unclear how it happened.
