EASTPOINTE (WWJ) - A Michigan State Police trooper was almost run over during a wild traffic stop in Macomb County.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. Monday on eastbound I-94 near 9 Mile Road. Police say troopers stopped a vehicle because it had an expired license plate and the driver wasn't wearing a seat belt.

When a trooper approached the car, he saw open intoxicants inside the front seat area. The driver provided his license but the passenger provided a false ID. The passenger then ran from the car across the freeway and into lanes of traffic.

The trooper ran after the passenger and as he was in front of the suspect vehicle, the driver began to pull forward. The trooper avoided being run over but was struck by the driver's side mirror. Troopers started to pursue the vehicle, but it was quickly ended as they had the driver's ID.

Troopers went to the man's home and observed him running through the backyard. A K9 track was started, but was unsuccessful.

Police say a warrant request will be submitted as the investigation continues.
