(WWJ) Striking video was captured of a massive tornado today, with the help of a drone that followed it across an Oklahoma field.
The twister was one of at least four that reportedly touched down in Oklahoma on Tuesday, according to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman. There were no immediate reports of injuries and it appears that the danger may have passed, at least for the moment, as tornado warnings for several areas of that state expired at 4 p.m. CDT. Forecasters with The Weather Channel say May is typically when the peak of tornado activity occurs in the U.S. Based on data from 1998 through 2017, the average number of tornadoes in the U.S. during May is 279, which is a bit higher than the second busiest month, June, which average 213 tornadoes.
Forecasters say that tornado activity has been shifting over the last few decades -- increasing in parts of Michigan and Ohio, as well as in Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa, according to 2018 study in the journal Climate and Atmospheric Science. There has been a slight decrease in the Great Plains; with the biggest drop in Texas, which despite that still sees the most tornadoes of any state.
