Voices of the Community: Creating A Vibrant Southwest Detroit

Voices of the Community

Welcome to Voice's in the Community, I'm Lloyd Jackson and today we spoke with Maria Salinas, Executive Director of Congress of Communities whose mission is to provide leadership and facilitate collaboration of residents, youth and stakeholders in southwest Detroit to foster a vibrant and sustainable community. We will also be joined by Sergio Guerra, one of the youth council members at Congress of Communities. He's also one of the youth planners for the youth driven community center being built. But first let's bring in Executive Director Maria Salinas… Maria welcome to Voices of the Community.

Sergio says the center is going to be a safe space for the community. It'll be a place where kids, parents and the community can go to get services like after school tutoring and the youth council will be there. It will be the new hub for Congress of Communities.

One of the programs the youth council has, which is very timely in the wake of the racial protests and demonstrations going on across the country, is youth dialog on race and ethnicity.

Sergio says it's an amazing beautiful program that really is eye opening for many youth who may have thought their eyes were already open.

It will be the youth, Sergio says that will change the way society thinks when it comes to racial issues. He says young people have seen what has happened in the past and are not going for it anymore. They want to live in a world of happiness and equality.

There is also a fundraiser for the youth driven community center being built by Congress of Communities that will help renovate, the foreclosed home they purchased through funds from a grant, and help fund all of the services that will be available at the center.

You can give by going to WWW.Congressofcommunities.com or find them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Thanks for looking and listening to Voices Of The Community
