'Void' Opens Up Under 15 Mile Road – Former Site Of Big Fraser Sinkhole

FRASER (WWJ) - Crews are at work at a familiar spot in Fraser, where another big hole has opened up under the road.

The Macomb County Public Works Office says it's working with the city of Fraser to "fill a void" that formed under 15 Mile Road between Hayes and Utica roads.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the right lane of eastbound 15 Mile Rd. was blocked just east of Hayes, with work ongoing.

"Crews have removed the pavement from a roughly ten to 15-foot section of the roadway here; backhoe at work here digging this area area out," WWJ's Jon Hewett reported from the scene, shortly after 5 p.m.

While this is, in fact, the very spot that a massive sinkhole opened up Christmas Eve, 2016 -- costing $70,000 to fix --- this doesn't appear to be as big of a problem.

The void appears to have formed due to a water leak from a faulty water connection to a fire hydrant in the area, officials said. The leak washed away some soil and caused a void to form under the southernmost lane of 15 Mile.

Fraser Dept. of Public Works officials noticed a crack in the road early this morning during snow plow/salting operations and closed the lane.

To make the repair, a small stretch of pavement will need to be removed, officials said, the water line repaired, the void filled with dirt and a temporary repair made to the pavement. It's unclear at this time how long this may take.

Officials said a more permanent pavement repair will be made once warmer weather returns.
