BROWNSTOWN TWP. (WWJ) - Officials are warning residents about a police impersonator who stopped at least one woman in Wayne County.
Brownstown Township police were contacted around 10:30 p.m. Friday by a woman who said she was pulled over near Inkster and Sibley Roads by white male driving a large, dark-colored SUV who was representing himself as a police officer. The SUV had a red and blue light affixed near the rear-view mirror and a spotlight near the driver’s side.
The man approached the woman and asked numerous times to roll down her window. In a post that was shared by police on Facebook, the woman claims the man told her he would break her window for not cooperating if she refused to roll it down.
The woman told the man that she didn't feel safe and was attempting to use her phone to call 911 when he got back in his vehicle, turned off all "emergency" lights and headlights and drove away without further incident.
The suspect is described as a white male, early 30’s, with light facial hair on his chin. He was wearing dark-colored jeans, a navy blue jacket with "POLICE" across the chest, and a navy blue baseball cap with a curved brim and "POLICE" across the face of the hat. No weapon, gun belt, patches or badge were seen.
The suspect vehicle is described as a large dark-colored SUV with no known police markings on the side.
If an un-marked SUV attempts to stop you, police advise to pull into a lighted area and call 911 to verify the authenticity of the officer. A genuine officer will be in full uniform when conducting traffic stops.
