Weather Alert: Frost Advisory For Metro Detroit Early Saturday

frost in spring

DETROIT (WWJ) - You should consider covering up or bringing in your patio plants.

The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory, in effect from 2 a.m. until 8 a.m. Saturday, May 11, for all of Southeast Michigan.

NWS forecasters say areas of frost are expected in metro Detroit overnight, as temperatures fall down into the mid-30s, and winds remain calm to light. When this type of advisory is in effect, damage to cold sensitive vegetation is expected; and sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

Meanwhile, it'll be a little bit worse in other areas of the state.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning, also in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday for the Grand Rapids area. Up North, the National Weather Service in Gaylord has issued a Freeze Warning in effect from midnight Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday.

Larry Ensfield, President and CEO of Michigan Blueberry Growers Association, said that while crops can be lost when there's a freeze, he expected the fruit to survive the weekend.

"To do crop damage for us right now it would need to get below 27 degrees, maybe 28 degrees for an extended period of time," Ensfield said. "So, right now for the position of the crop and exactly where we're at, I'd say we don't have a lot of worry."

Looking at the weekend forecast, WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Bowers doesn't have much good news to share.

He said metro Detroiters can expect unseasonably cool temperatures through the weekend; with perhaps a peek of sunshine on Saturday.

"Mother's Day, it doesn't look good," Bowers said, speaking live on WWJ. "It's gonna be overcast, damp, very chilly, off and on rain and drizzle. And, unfortunately, much of the time the temperature's only going to be in the 40s."
