(WWJ) Due to dangerously low temperatures, with forecasted wind chills as low as 50 degrees below zero, much of Michigan is shutting down.

Following Monday's storm that dumped as many as 13 inches of snow in parts of Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an order declaring a state of emergency to help address threats to public health and safety.

Michiganders are urged to stay home if they can. For those who have an appointment, class or activity scheduled over the next couple of days, it's a good idea to call ahead to make sure it hasn't been canceled before you go out.

Here is just some of what is closed/canceled due to the cold:

“Our staff will be working to ensure that the animals receive the same excellent care as always during this cold snap, but it is simply too cold for our guests to visit the Detroit Zoo or Belle Isle Nature Center,” said Scott Carter, chief life sciences officer for the Detroit Zoological Society. “Additional staff are on site all night when temps drop this low to make sure building systems function as they should and the animals are safe.”

Wind Chill Warning is now in effect for all of Southeast Michigan until 11 a.m. Thursday. Wind chills are predicted as low as -50 degrees in many places, including Metro Detroit. Frostbite will occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, and hypothermia and death are possible if precautions are not taken. Pets should be brought inside. Residents who need assistance or guidance during the extreme cold are encouraged to call 2-1-1.
