DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit arson teams are investigating after a woman was killed in a firebombing overnight.

The fire took off around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Blue Star Lounge On Joy Road and Pinehurst Street, between Meyers Road and Wyoming Avenue on the west side.

After the flames were extinguished, firefighters discovered the woman's body in an upstairs area of the building. Police say the woman was burned beyond recognition.

Witnessed told police that someone driving a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Avalanche, threw something flammable at the building.

The bar wasn't open for business at the time, and no one else was injured.

Dee Dee, who lives in the neighborhood, was shocked and saddened to hear what had happened.

"It was just a regular bar," Dee Dee told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "They have live bands on Thursdays, I heard. It was a nice crowd down here. I've been down here a couple of times and played pool."

A medical examiner is expected to determine the woman's cause of death.

An investigation is ongoing.
