Joe Hiti was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from Bethel University in St. Paul, with a B.A. in journalism. While there he was the sports editor for his student newspaper, studied in New York City at The King's College, and wrote for Brooklyn Paper covering crime-related and general news stories.
After graduating, he freelanced at News Talk 830 WCCO during the George Floyd protests of 2020 and the 2020 election while also working full-time covering education and local governments for a local paper outside the Twin Cities. In addition, he wrote about the Minnesota Twins during the pandemic-shortened 2020 MLB season.
