Don’t believe everything you read on the internet, even if it comes from The New York Times.

The celebrated publication inadvertently published an article on Tuesday titled "Fields of Watermelons Found on Mars, Police Say." The sudden and shocking Martian revelation of a "glut of outer space watermelons" was caused "by the rise of fruit aliens," the story's sub headline claimed.

"The FBI declined to comment on reports of watermelons raining down, but confirmed that kiwis have been intercepted," its author, "Joe Schmoe" wrote.

The story was deleted less than an hour later, as reported by Futurism.

It was replaced by an error message, describing the accidential publication as "a mock article intended for a testing system."
